Rubia cordifolia L. used traditional treatment Kenya despite no supporting scientific data. Objectives: To evaluate anti-plasmodial efficacy extracts from the aerial part against chloroquine sensitive (3D7) (W2) strains. Methods: Hexane, methanol water were separately crude extractions open shade dried plant parts. Phytochemical composition was determined qualitatively. Anti-plasmodial serial dilutions (range; 0.4 50 μg/ml) each extract evaluated vitro compared using ANOVA Tukey’s HSD test, at p<0.05). Results: All significantly inhibited parasites growth, a dose dependent manner. At μg/ml, inhibition (84.07%, 77.94% 66.08%) hexane, respectively W2 (80.06%, 78.36% 60.92%) 3D7 strain. Hexane showed IC50 0.551 μg/ml 2.747 micrograms/ml respectively. Methanol extract, 1.231 3.528 μ g/ml respectively, aqueous moderate activity, 5.348 17.341 strains Chloroquine (W2 strain) more responsive than Conclusion: activities order, Hexane>methanol>aqueous attributed phytochemicals present extracts. This presents evidence R. as anti-malarial drugs’ source. In vitro Antiviral Activity of Rubia cordifolia Aerial Part Extract against Rotavirus
The root of Rubia cordifolia has been used traditionally as a hemostatic agent, while the aerial part of the plant consisting of leaf and stem is known to exhibit anti-diarrheal properties and has been widely used as a remedy in many parts of China. As rotavirus is one of the most commonly associated diarrhea-causing pathogen, this study aims to investigate the anti-rotaviral effect of R. cordi...
متن کاملChloroquine-Resistant Plasmodium falciparum: Effect
Glucose stimulates the high-affinity processes of chloroquine and amodiaquin accumulation in owl monkey erythrocytes infected with a chloroquine-susceptible strain of Plasmodium falciparum. Although these erythrocytes have greater ability to accumulate amodiaquin than chloroquine, glucose has relatively less effect on amodiaquin accumulation than on chloroquine accumulation. In contrast to thes...
متن کاملIn vitro potentiation of antibiotic activities by a catecholate iron chelator against chloroquine-resistant Plasmodium falciparum.
FR160, a catechol iron chelator, and tetracyclines or norfloxacin exert in vitro additive or synergistic activity against a chloroquine-resistant Plasmodium falciparum clone. FR160 shows antagonistic effects in association with macrolides, ofloxacin, and rifampin.
متن کاملPotentiation of artemisinin activity against chloroquine-resistant Plasmodium falciparum strains by using heme models.
The influence of different metalloporphyrin derivatives on the antimalarial activity of artemisinin was studied with two chloroquine-resistant strains of Plasmodium falciparum (FcB1-Colombia and FcM29-Cameroon) cultured in human erythrocytes. This potentiation study indicates that the manganese complex of meso-tetrakis(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin has a significant synergistic effect on the acti...
متن کاملIn vitro assessment of 2-acetylpyridine thiosemicarbazones against chloroquine-resistant Plasmodium falciparum.
A series of 2-acylpyridine thiosemicarbazones was evaluated in vitro against a chloroquine-resistant Plasmodium falciparum strain. Antimalarial activity was assessed by the inhibition of uptake of [G-3H]hypoxanthine by the parasites. Among the mono- and disubstituted derivatives tested, 13 of 17 had 50% inhibitory doses of less than 10 ng/ml. Increasing the size of the ring at N4 from four to f...
